Post Production - Random Firl by Parot Disco

1) What features of post production did you use?
For our music video we used - Editing - cropping and resizing eg In Josh's scene we had to crop the floor and anything extra out of the frame do give the sense that he is in a bedroom not a classroom.
- We had to cut and reorder our music video eg cuts were used in all scenes one examle would be my scene where the scene cut from long shot to mid shot to long shot to reaction shot. This made the scene smooth and quick. We reordered the instrumental part of our music video to fit in time with the playing of drums, guitars etc.
- Trial and error was used within our musc video when we were experimenting whether to use spray painted gummy bears or flash created gummy bears.
- We used quality control to make the flash animations in HD.
We used special effects, we played with about with the speed of the music video in my scenes 'reaction shot'. Also colour correction to make the stills brighter for the animation. We used fades between every transition from live action to animation so the transition was smoother.
- Music was then added over the top so that everything made sense and scenes were cut to be in time with the music, music was also extended so more of our video could be viewed.
- The use of  the program 'Flash' was also used to create the animation scenes, props and animate the stills.

What features of post production did you use?

The features of post production that we used in our music video was firstly final cut - used to cut the footage, move it around and look to see which 'take' was the best one. We also used final cut to do the lip syncing - which was useful as we had so many different pieces of footage to match to the song and final cut made this process much easier and quicker to do as final cut has settings which allowed us to speed up and slow down parts to make them fit, we also slowed down a section at the end of our music video for effect. Other effects we used were fading the end of the video to white and some of the parts of our video were merged together through fades. Another feature of post production we used was photoshop - used to make our poster and digi-pak, photoshop allowed us to add text to pictures we uploaded and add effects to the pictures to give them a better finish.

What impact did your post production decisions have on your products? (tone, atmosphere, realism)

HANNAH FENN AND JACK READER.

What features of post production did you use?
We used a lot quick cuts which worked well with the style of the music, which is rapping. We filmed a lot more than we needed so we could pick out the best parts which is good quality control. When we filmed the weather was not very good so wedecided when editing to add colour filters and it had a strong impact on making the colour seem a lot brighter than it was. We used final cut to edit in the lip syncing in time to the music, which took a long time and the process was dificult to get right, but over all it was a success. The end of our video we decided not to put conventional credits instead we decided to fade out the final shot of Harvey and Jack walking through the subway.

What impact did your post production decisions have on your product?
It was important that we took time to make sure the lip syncing was done properly as if it was not the video would look unprofesional and not very realistic. We also made sure we agreed with the group of the best shots, so that the final shots we used have good quality.

What did you do more successfully in your advanced portfolio than your foundation portfolio?
We used more advanced camera work the second time, for example we used a lot more camera shots and the camera work was alot more steady. Rather than using a lot of static shots we decided it would look more professional to use tracking shots as we got that from wathching alot of conventinal rap videos.

What post production skills do you still need to develp?

PROS AND CONS-Finalcut Express
Pros-
Easy to work with
a range of Effects and filters.

Digital technologies - Austin, Gerogia

Garageband -
  • The backing track for our thriller work - We used Garageband to create an opening sequence backing track for a thriller video. We had to try and create the right noises in order to create the right effect.
Pros - It was helpful in the way that there is a range of sounds that you can merge together to create the effect that you are looking for. Cons - Although I do feel that Garageband did not have the right sound effects to create the right atmosphere for a thriller opening sequence.
  •  The backing track for our children's film.
Final Cut Express -

  • Children's film preliminary task.
  • Children's film task.
  • Thriller preliminary task.
  • Thriller opening sequence task.
  • Music video preliminary - we made use of the reverse tool to allow us to fit clips to the music, in particular the scratching. Pros - It was simple and i think effective. Cons - It was a bit difficult with certain clips to make them the right length to fit the music.
  • Lip syncing task.
  • Music video task - we used Final Cut Pro and a plug in called mojo for the filters, to make the weather look bright and more like the videos we used for inspiration. Pros - it allowed us to create an authentic atmosphere through adding saturation and a tint. Cons - rendering the files was very time consuming and I had to do it all in my own time at home.
Photoshop -
  • Introduction to Photoshop (World in the eye task).
  • ident for thriller task - we created an ident that we felt represented the thriller genre. To achieve this we needed to use the lasso tool to cut a hole in the A. Pros - it worked fairly well after we added the bullet sound on final cut. Cons - If you don't have basic knowledge of photoshop then it can be difficult to use effectively.
HD Cameras
Digital technologies.

Final cut - editing videos.
We used final cut when editing and putting together our preliminary for the thriller, thriller, preliminary for the children's film, then the children's films and the music preliminary which was a lip syncing video so we could get the timing right and finally the music video's. At the beginning of each section we would also use it for our preliminary tasks which would help us to develop our skills and know what we are doing.

The cons of using final cut is that it is a complicated bit of software to use for someone who has never used it before. The functions are complicated, however once trained, it does get a bit simpler with practice.

A pro of using final cut is that the outcome of a video is quite good for something basic. As non professionals this software allows us to create good videos.

Garage band- create music.
We used garage band to create the music for our thriller video's, we used different instrument sounds pieced together to make a sound track fir our thriller opening.

A con of using Garage Band is using the same sounds throughout the track eventually making the music sound very repetitive.

A pro of using Garage Band is having all the sounds to make music which matches the style of the thriller. Such as sudden sounds, loud, quiet, intense and more.

Photoshop - editing photographs.
We used photoshop in different ways. We used it when creating the album cover and a poster for our music videos.

The cons of using photoshop is similar to final cut. It is complicated to use which makes it challenging however it has tutorials on the internet which give details description on how to do specific effects.

The pros of using photoshop is that the outcome can be very intense, creative and well done. Once you've got the hang of it, it makes the whole process a lot easier.

Garage-band was used to make music for our childrens film and put music over scenes.

The pros of garage-band were that it had many sounds to be able to make lots of types of music, also it was relatively easy to use.  The disadvantages of garage-band are firstly that you only have limited sounds to choose from, in addition you cannot change the tempo to make your music slower or faster to suit the scene. We used this to make the music for our childrens film

We also used the program Final Cut to edit our films, the pros of this were you could edit the films easily and add effects to enhance the films. Also its really easy to use and follow to be able to edit the way you want. The disadvantages of final cut are the way
